The bulldog originated in British Isles around the 13th century, decended from ancient astiff type dogs. The original bulldog had to be courageous and almost insensitive to pain, because he was used in bull baiting which involved the dog grabbing onto the bull’s noise and roughly shaking it. Purpose of bull baiting was to tenderize the bull’s meat. These early bulldogs were heavier and taller than today’s bulldogs. Once when bulldog’s had a fir hold on bulls snout, it wasn’t posible to bulls shake it off, beacuse bulldogs had wide mouth and powerfull jaws, his flat short nose enabled to breathe while he hold bulls snout, even the wrinkle on his head had purpose to direct the blood that resulted from his grip on the bull, flow away from his eyes.
HISTORY
After 1835 when bullbaiting was outlawed in England, bulldogs had no more purpose , but bulldows weren’t disaperied becouse few people who were admired Bulldog’s strenght, stamina and persistance. They decided to save the apearance and breed the to have gentle and sweet teperament. It was very sucesfull, and Bullog become one of friendliest and the most tranquil of dogs. That was the triumpf of the human ability to rehabilitate an entire breed.
DESCRIPTION
Bulldogs are low to the ground, they are medium size, copact dog. They have muscular body which made him to have distinctive gait. Head is masive and square with extra skin on both skull and forehead falling in folds.Their cheeks extend to the sides of the eyes. Eyes are round, dark and deep set. The nose is black and broad with large nostrils. Their ears are small and thin and set high on the head.The bulldog’s jaws are massive, strong ,very broad and square wiht hanging upper lips. Skin on their foreheads have dense wrinkles. Their short tails are straight or screwed and crried low. Bulldogs coat isstraight, short, fine tekstured, gloosy and smooth. Coat ay come in variety of colors: red brindle and other shades of brindle, white, fawn solid red, fallow, piebald, pale yellow or washed-out red.
TEMPERAMENT
Bulldogs apearance can be somewhat intimidating , but he is friendly and easy going, he gets along with everybody.Theirs temperament is affected by a number of factors like training, heredity and socialization. When they are still puppy they are full of energy, curious and playfull , but they slow down when they are older, and they can become stuborn and lazy. So they need early socialization, expose them to many different people, sounds, animals and then they will grows up to be well rounded dog. They can be slowly learners, but when they once learns something, they learns it for good. Bulldog seek people attention because they love people, and they are enjoy to languishing next to their masters. Bulldogs love children and they are very gentle with them, but they won’t spending hours chasing balls or running with children, they can play for a while, but after that they will find they watching the world around them. Because they are very courage , they have exelent guarding abilities.They are not bakers, their apperance is enought to frighten off intruders. It is very important to daily exercised them , because they are not very enthusiastic about going to a walk. Some bulldogs can be a bit dominating, that’s why they need an owner who knows how to display strong leadership.
HEALTH
Bulldog has unique body and head structure which made him prone to health problems, respiratory problems are the most common. Also if they don’t have enought exercise, they can become overwight, which will stress their body, and may aggravate existing health problems. They can have poor eyesight, Bulldogs are susceptible to heatstroke in hot car, or warm weather. They are prone to mast cell tumors. In some lines birth defect are common. Their skin is prone to skin infections. Some of them can have hip and knee problems. When they are fed by any other food than regular dog food, they can be prone to flatulence. Maybe, because their large head size, puppies are often delivered by caesarian section.
LIVING CONDITIONS
Bulldogs have low to moderate level of energy, which make them suited to any type of home. They will be good from an apartment to a house with yard. Inside the house they can to sleep until it’s time to eat again. They are ready for nap after just 15 minutes play, and they will be happy with a brief stroll up and down your street. Bulldogs are not swimmers, so you must protect them to fallinig in pool or pond, if you have it. Their tolerancy of warm or cold weather is very low. If the weather is very warm you must provide him an air-conditioned environment and plenty of fresh water. One thing you must consider bulldog snore.
CARE
Their shorthaired coat is an average shedder, so it is easy to groom. You had to brush their coat once a week with a firm bristle brush. Every day wipe his face with a damp cloth, espectualy to clean inside the wrinkles. After they are washed be sure to dry inside the wrinkle. You can use for wiping wrinkles with baby wipes that have lanolin and aloa vera. Every day washed theirs nose and apply petroleum jelly to it to keep it soft, and prevent it from becoming flaky and dry. Your bulldogs nails trim once or twice a month. You must in puppyhood introduce nail trim , and then this experience will be less stressfull for both of you. To remove tartar and bacteria from his teeth , brush them daily or at least twice a week. Every time you groom him check for sores, rashes or some infections. Ears should smell good, eyes should be clear.
FEEDING
Bulldogs are big eaters, he will likely eat anything he can get, so you can easily overfeed him. Remember you are responsible for portioning his food and monitoring his weight. You must monitoring his weight since he is puppy because this short, stout breed is prone to joint and bone problems when he is owerweight. So if you feed him carefully he will have longer and happier life. Use stainless bowl to feed him, because stainless bowl you can wash in dish washer and it will contain far less bacteria than plasic bowl. When they eat they make a quite mess, so use a pan which has a flat bottom and straight sides.Your bulldog should have fresh water at all time, no mater how old is he. If you see that he is become to be fat, take him to more exercise and give him less food.
